What are the responsibilities of universities ?

In October 10th, 2013, an international conference, hosted by University of Science and Technology of China in Hefei, Anhui Province, have talked about the functions and characteristics of top-notch research universities. (lead-in) Also, the conference showed the importance in realizing the responsibilities of universities for its long-term development in every country. (transition sentence) Two important ones, they mentioned, are cultivating talents and leading the direction of social culture.
There is no doubt that cultivating talents is the most basic responsibility of universities. (topic sentence) First, the country needs lots of talents that come from universities for its developments in different fields. Second, for cultural reasons, it is a traditional role of universities. For example, in China, the latest university was founded in the Qing Dynasty and used for the cultivation of intellectuals. The two parts show it a fundamental job for universities to cultivate talents.
The young, such as university students, are always labelled with fashion, energetic, confident and influential. And universities students, a good example of young people, easily catch up with the overall trend of the society. So, leading the direction of social culture naturally become another responsibility of universities. (topic sentence) As is known to all, patriotism is a common concept in the school motto of many universities, such as Peking University, Xi'an Jiaotong University and so on. These mottoes help students remember to be patriotism and even influence the sense of the public. Additionally, what students learned in the university is also the indication of the higher education, pointing the direction of social developments.
