According to the dictionary, self-expression is the expression of one’s own personality, feelings, & ideas, an indication of one’s spirit or character, or the assertion of one’s individual traits. This is usually done through art, or any other creative outlets, such as fashion. In this society, there are many issues that we as people have with self-expression. A big issue is people not knowing what their medium for self-expression is because of lack of creativity & inspiration. With that being said, I definitely know that music & writing are the mediums that I use for self-expression.
Music is a huge chunk of my life, whether it be singing a song or listening to one. Since I was twelve years old, I have loved everything about music. I love lyrics, beats, melodies, hearing people harmonize, & even knowing the meanings of lyrics. I feel that I see music so much more differently than other people because I have been involved in it for so long. I have allowed myself to be immersed in music; music soothes me when nothing else can. If I am sad, I can listen to a song & feel better within minutes.
At times, I listen to music to stay focused & energized. An example of this is when I have a large load of homework. Music is even being used to complete this essay. Music wakes my mind up in the morning when I’m getting ready for school, after the sounding of the alarm clock does, of course. I have learned that music is everywhere; I feel that this is a fact of life that many people fail to realize. I have been lucky to understand its presence in my life.
From the day we learn how to write, what we choose to do with the ability afterwards is simply up to us. As for me, writing is not only something I am forced to do when I am doing school work, but it is my way of saying anything & everything that I am too scared to say to people around me.
