The word conflict stirs up thoughts of anger, friction, mistrust, frustration, and hostility. Rarely does anyone think of conflict as a tool for deeper thinking, better results, and dynamic communication. Conflict has existed since the creation of man. Perception about our reality is the basis of conflict. Conflict provides a check and balance system which is necessary for the sustenance of human nature.
Historically conflict has been the source of tension and war between societies. Differing societies hold their cultural beliefs and values as superior.These conflicts can exist within a society and well as on a global scale. In addition, societies seek to increase their natural resources, at the expense of weaker nations. History is filled examples of nations that pursued imperialism in which conflict was created by greed and opposing ideologies. A check and balance system is necessary to neutralize escalating conflicts before there is mass destruction.
A check and balance system consists of universal rules of morality. On a personal level, this would be equivalent to man’s conscience. On a global level, this system would represent rules governing humanity’s behavior towards each other. This system requires open and dynamic communication between opposing ideologies. This system also requires the fundamental belief that all conflict can be resolved through mutual cooperation. Sharing the world’s resources for the benefit of all of its inhabitants will enable this system to be functional.
