What Makes a Good Teacher? - Essay 2

I think that the most important quality that makes a good teacher is the ability to teach without double standards. There is a reason that there are specific lesson plans for specific grade levels, and there is a reason that schoolwork is graded the way it is. Many studies have been performed and continue to be performed to find the best way to educate the most number of students, what materials those students should be studying at various grade levels, and how much of any given subject must be learned for the student to be able to earn a passing grade in that subject. Obviously, this strategy is meant to work for the majority, but that is the best way to operate. It is not a means to take away a student’s individualism, but rather a way to insure that each student has the same opportunities as every other student.
It makes no difference what a student’s background is, or their current situation, no student should be given preference in grades over another. This concept applies to students with both good and bad personal situations. For example, the star athlete should not receive better grades than any other student simply because he is an athlete, but neither should the student with parents going through a difficult divorce. However, that does not mean that a teacher should not try to recognize a student who is having difficulties and do everything they can to help the student absorb the class information and perform better on assignments and tests. It is not a double standard to assist a student, but it would be if they still failed to make a passing grade and were awarded one anyway out of sympathy from the teacher for all of the effort the student put in.
A major teaching factor that I would consider irrelevant is the environment in which the teacher is working. I am a firm believer in the fact that an education can be both given and received in almost any environment, as long as both parties are willing to do the work. If a teacher truly...
