It takes place in unoccupied Africa when the French were in control of it. Although the movie is more based on the characters rather than the actual war going on, the war is easily point out and recognized. Without the war taking place in the background, the movie would be nothing. The setting is what gives the movie its classical atmosphere and mood.
The movie is also identified as a classic for the simple reason that it was not based off of a book or anything like that. “Casablanca” was a classic situation of true love and separation. It was the first of its kind and very original.
