NCAA Corruption
Since the establishment of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) in 1906, universities and other college institutions have been battling for equilibrium (Wong 6). The NCAA was meant to set rules and regulations to help the fairness and athlete safety. NCAA has proven otherwise (Rosenberg). Sports analyst Jay Bilas said, “The NCAA has proven over and over again that they are a failed force in college athletics” (MacGregor). Student athletes have lost their eligibility over simple car washes. Members of the NCAA have been caught accepting money from outside sources, and forced universities to grieve for decades because of bad judgment by school officials (Moon). The NCAA has actually impacted the game outcomes of the interference with the student athletes. The NCAA has been causing turmoil in the world of college sports and the impact of the players involved.
Major violations in college sports have been over-looked, and the punishment for these violations have been mis prosecuted. Johnny Manziel was accused of accepting tens of thousands of dollars from sports brokers for his autograph memorabilia. Mr. Manziel should have been stripped of his eligibility forever. Since the NCAA was profiting millions of dollars from student athletes and universities, they failed to properly punish Manziel while the NCAA were hypocrites(Zirin). Dave Zirin described this controversy as a “slap on the hand”, and it is hard to argue that statement considering he was suspended for only one half of his 2013 opening football game with his team Texas A&M versus Rice University. Huge recruiting violations are going on today right in front of our eyes. In college football, highly-recruited high school football players are often “assigned to” the athletes to entice them into their program when visiting their institution (Gisclair).
