One cause for countries to have Nuclear weapons is for defense. In the world today there are many countries that are threatening to attack other countries. Countries want to possess nuclear weapons so that they can be used against another country if that country used one against the other. This will balance the power between different countries in the world today. An example of this would be the United States and the Soviet Union. Both of these countries have nuclear weapons to defend themselves from each other and will balance the power between these two world powers.
Another cause for Nuclear weapons is the existence of the state of Israel. Iran a strong Islamic republic wants to develop Nuclear weapons to destroy Israel. Since Iran is a strong Islamic republic and Israel is a strong Jewish country supported by the U.S, Iran feels threatened since Israel took Muslim land in the Middle East. The presence of Nuclear weapons in Iran might cause other countries in that area to develop nuclear weapons.
A huge cause for Nuclear weapons is competition with rival countries. The Soviet Union and the United States devolved Nuclear weapons to compete with each other, and this started a nuclear arms race between these two countries. Also the possession of Nuclear weapons shows that a country has power and stability. Only a powerful country with lots of money and resources can develop its own Nuclear weapons due to the price and necessary resources needed to develop nuclear weapons. If a country is not stable government wise then the current unstable government would not be able to fund and go through the very long process of creating a nuclear weapon. This shows that a major reason countries want to have nuclear weapons is to show it has stability and power.
