Why Do I Keep a Cat?

Recently more and more people have come to keep pets such as dogs, cats, birds, and so on. Some houses or apartments in Japan are even designed for cats or dogs to live comfortably in. Why do people keep pets? Of course, pets can’t live alone. They have to be fed every day. Their houses or rooms have to be cleaned often. Most houses have to be equipped with air cleaners because of their pet smells. These are other kinds of household chores. Why do people accept household chores for their pets? Are pets really beneficial for us?
I keep a cat at house. I am the only cat lover in my family. So when I told them I decided to keep a cat in my home, they didn’t agree with me, saying, “A cat is not useful. It costs much to feed it. Moreover, you have to clean your room because of it every day. Don’t you really know that?” “Sure.” I replied. I had strong reasons to keep a cat then. So even though they didn’t understand me, they permitted me to keep a cat. That was about three years ago.
As they said, I have been doing additional household chores for my male cat called “Matio”. I have to buy his foods, clean his places, and clean his toilet almost every day. When he was sick, I had to send him to the hospital. There are many things to do for him. But I have never thought these are troublesome, because he gives me much more joy all the time. This joy is like how people feel when they see their babies. Matio can’t communicate his feelings in a spoken language, but he shows them in his face or whole body. He never tells lies. He expresses what he really feels to me. For example, when I come home from work every evening, Matio always gets so happy. He lies on his back and keeps purring. He welcomes me like this every day. I know this reason. My home-coming means his dinnertime. Anyway, I also become happy when I see him rejoicing.
