Why Is It Important to Study Language Arts in High School?

There are a number of reasons why it is important to continue studying language arts in high school. First and foremost, in my opinion, is simply to develop one’s ability to communicate clearly. We are taught, very basically, how to communicate throughout elementary and junior high school; by definition (dictionary.reference.com), communication means: 1. the act or process of communicating; fact of being communicated. 2. The imparting or interchange of thoughts, opinions, or information by speech, writing, or signs. 3. Something imparted, interchanged, or transmitted. 4. A document or message imparting news, views, information, etc. By the time students enter high school, as stated in the question, the majority are already capable of accomplishing these tasks on a satisfactory level. It is in high school where those skills are developed and enhanced through the study of language arts. It is important that students develop their communication skills (especially before entering the “real world”, where one is entirely responsible for their own success) in order to further themselves in the working world, build healthy relationships, express themselves accurately (self expression).
High school takes place at the turning point from childhood to adulthood. The study of language arts is fundamental during this time, as it helps students in learning how to develop interpersonal relationships. Studying literature, in particular, gives students an idea of how to behave (and how to express themselves) around people of different statuses; what is socially acceptable to say in discussion, and with whom it is appropriate to divulge specific information to. For example, how you should address your teacher, versus how you should address your peers. Or, what you would tell your best friend about personal issues, as...
