Why Rafael Nadal is the greatest tennis player of all time

Many people will tell you that Roger Federer is without a doubt the best to ever play tennis due to his 17 major championships and numerous records. However, I believe many of his accomplishments are a reflection of his lack of competition. Rafael Nadal has played in a much tougher era, and had he been brought up in the same era as Federer, he too would have at least 17 grand slams. Federer entered an era of declining greats such as Sampras and Agassi who were on their way out. His most consistent rival was Andy Roddick, and Roddick pales in comparison to the likes of Nadal and Djokovic. Nadal entered the tennis scene when Roger Federer was in his prime, yet had no problem defeating Federer on a consistent basis. Right as Nadal took over Federer in 2010 and was ready to take over the tennis world, Novak Djokovic emerged and will go down as one of the greatest players of all time. Nadal has had to deal with two of the best players to ever pick up a racquet in their primes, while Federer was able to play in an era of declining players and good, but not great players such as Roddick, Safin, and Hewitt.
