Why I chose to be an Engineer
I am in College to help improve my ability to support my family. Straight out of high school I went into the Navy, but ended up getting a medical discharge after a short time. Ever since then I have been in the construction industry for close to twenty years now, for the past ten years I have worked primarily for myself building houses. Everything seemed to be working out just fine, until recently when the economy crashed and the housing market went with it. In the past two years I have went from being so busy I barely had time to sleep to having nothing to do all day. As a father of four I have a responsibility to myself and my family to improve and bring as much stability back into our house that I can. For that reason I have chosen to go to school to get a degree in Engineering, a field that I feel I can excel in and enjoy. I feel that with 20 years experience in construction and management, that engineering would be a good fit. I am hoping and confident that it will open up multiple career choices due the broad education involved in getting an Engineering degree.
I have selected Mechanical Engineering for several reasons, it is one of the largest “not many companies can work without an engineer on their staff somewhere”, it is the broadest out of all engineering degrees “everything form the pull tab on your pop to the Hubble telescope had to be engineered” , and it is by far one of the oldest types of engineering ” Marcus Vitruvius Pollio who lived in the first century B.C. is thought to have been the first engineer ever and George Washington was considered to be America’s first engineer”. The career outlook for a Mechanical Engineer will always be favorable due to their broad knowledge that is required to get the degree, and it doesn’t hurt that the pay is also good. As a Mechanical engineer I will acquire knowledge from many Engineering disciplines including mechanics, energy and heat which can be used at most power...
