My decision to enroll in college has been a long one. I look back now and remember being a sophomore and wondering why people were worrying so much about college when they still had two whole years to make a decision. When it came to my senior year I realized I had no money for college, no scholarships, nothing, didn’t even know what I wanted to go to school for. As the summer months went on I wondered if I would ever make it to college. When I joined the Army I knew about the benefits they offered for college but still did not think too much about it. Once we deployed I rarely thought about school, the only thing I really thought about was getting through the deployment and making it back to America. The first few months of the deployment went quick, we were constantly doing something. Once things started to slow down and I began getting more down time I started thinking about earning a degree and the door ways it could open for me.
Earning a degree has always been a goal of mine but I was never sure how to achieve this goal. I decided to take advantage of my one hundred percent tuition assistance and get some classes started. The degree I am working towards right now is an associate’s degree in general studies. If I can get this degree before I get out of the army it will help prepare me for getting a bachelors in agriculture at Texas A&M University. When I get out of the Army I want to attend a university so I can meet new people outside of a work environment.
Going to college and obtaining this degree will also help me when it comes to my career. With even a two year degree, I will be able to apply for the Armies “Green to Gold” program. This program allows enlisted soldiers with a two year degree a chance to become officers. Becoming an officer will be a good achievement for me but it will open up new opportunities for schools in the Army that were not there before.
