Women Hollering Creek This short story written by Sandra Cisneros describes the life of a young Mexican woman, Cleofilas, who finds herself in an abusive marriage and in an unfamiliar country that becomes a prison to her until she finds the strength to take control of her life. Cleofilas, the protagonist, discovers quickly that the romantic notions of marital bliss are not always a reality. The beginning of the story takes place in Cleofilas’s hometown in Mexico. She grew up in this small town where she lived with her father and brothers. Like most small towns there is not much to occupy ones time, so Cloefilas spent her days gazing through the windows of local bridal shops and going over to her girlfriend’s house to watch the latest Spanish soaps. She dreamed of the day she would find true love like in “telenovela”. On the day of her wedding Cleofilas’s father hands her over to Juan Pedro. Juan Pedro takes Cleofilas away from all that is familiar to her and brings her to his home in The United States. Before Cleofilas departs for her new life her father reveals a bit of foreshadowing by telling her “I am your father, I will never abandon you.” It is not long before Cleofilas finds herself in her new role as a wife and mother. She spends many nights alone listening to the sounds of the interstate to soothe her to sleep while her husband stays out all night. The husband becomes the antagonist in the story. He repeatedly abuses Cleofilas and cries for forgiveness each time. It becomes very clear that the husband has a chauvinistic and controlling personality. He expects Cleofilas to solely take care of their children and have is dinner ready and waiting for him whenever he gets home. The Husband defiantly does not see his wife as an equal partner; he does possess an attitude of superiority.
