Women make up almost half of today’s labor force. Women have come a long way since the early years but in corporate America they don’t even share half the power. Gail Evans says only four of the Fortune 500 company CEOs are women, and its only been in the recent few years that even half of the Fortune 500 companies have more than one female officer. The old saying “this is a mans world” is still being depiced as the norm for most of the work force today. Women today are still fighting for the equality of pay and earned promotions from fellow employers.
A perfect example of the major inequality for women in the work force is the Wal-Mart v. Dukes . “im demanding justice” says Betty Dukes, the courages woman who decided back in 2001 to take action against the one of the worlds largest, if not the largest retail store called Wal-Mart. Although Dukes started out alone in this process of demanding equaity , her voice and persetance over the years has found favor in the eyes of so many other decriminated women. More than 9,500 women quickly stepped forward within 9 years to support Ms Dukes. As of today 1.6 million is said to be joined in fight against wal mart, this includes some former and current employees. (Fields)
In New America Media its was stated that in 1994 Dukes came to wal-Mart with 20 years experience already in the retail work force and was very familiar with industry. Starting off part-time at $5 an hour cashiering, Dukes says she saw the job as a chance to better her life by climbling the corparte mangement ladder at Wal-Mart. By 1997 she had advanced over the years to the level of customer serive manager, but soon discovered she had finllay hit the glass ceililng by not being able move up anymore or gain better pay as some of her male colleauges had already done.
