Word recognition is vital to the reading abilities of a child. Word recognition can be broken down into several ideas that will provide a full definition to the necessity of word recognition. One of the first parts of the definition is the skill of word recognition which is the ability of a reader to recognize words usually refers only to recognition by sight or recognition without the aid of word analysis. Another part of the definition is the ability to decode a word when coming upon a word that is not yet a part of their sight words. The definition of decoding is the process of taking words in print and changing them to spoken words. Then the final part of defining word recognition is the understanding of the word being used in the sentence. Therefore the third part of the word recognition definition would include meaning vocabulary. This refers to the meaning of words in their listening, speaking and reading vocabularies. The meaning of vocabulary is very important to the comprehension of the story being read by the child. These three components when taught and used correctly should be very helpful in developing a child’s word recognition.
As a child in first grade when I learned to read, I was taught to memorize sight words and read the books assigned in class. I found that this method was neither helpful nor effective. I spent most of my reading time asking my parents to tell me how to read certain words. I can remember being frustrated with reading and trouble with comprehension. It seemed that I spent some much time memorizing how to say word that I never learned proper and effective attack skills when coming upon a word that was unfamiliar. Even when helping my brother learn how to read, he was taught in a similar method and he also still has trouble reading.
