Some people may just see Captain D’s as a place to stop after church on Sundays to grab a bite to eat, but to me it’s much more than that. It’s where I work and has become very special to me. When a person comes in to eat they see us making their food and going on to the next order. What they don’t get to experience are the conversations we have with each other while standing there in front of those hot fryers. Whether they are about what we did that weekend, the problems were facing in our lives, or just sharing good knowledge with each other, each conversation has had its own special meaning in my life.
One of the things I love about my job is that it has become a place for me to be able to just get away from everything. I guess you could say it is like my sanctuary. It is where I can come to relax and not have to worry about other things that could be pressing on my mind. When you get to the back of the store and clock in the only thing that is then on your mind is the work you start doing. Everything else just goes away for the next eight hours and when that happens your mind is temporarily at ease.
I have been working there for a little over a year now and each day I am still learning something new. One thing I have learned is responsibility. I have never been the responsible one. If I could blame it on someone else and get away with it, I would. But since working at Captain D's I learned you cant just blame someone else. You have to take responsibility for your own actions and own up to your own faults and errors. I have also learned to be on time. Before I got my job I was always late for everything, but when you have a job they take being punctual very seriously. Being late one to many times will get you fired. And probably one of the most important things I have picked up is not to judge people when you do not know them. Half the people I work with I would have never seen myself befriending. It was not until after I got to know who they really were did...
