Functions of Management
The word management as defined by Bateman & Snell (2009) “is the process of working with people and resources to accomplish organizational goals.” This process requires many different functions some of which has changed due to external factors such as globalization, technology and the need for diversity in the workplace. The functions that are due to the evolution of external factors continue to change based on the needs and factors changing in order to stay competitive and productive. While those changes are necessary and the functions that are involved in those changes are necessary at that time, the most fundamental functions of management have historically been and will continue to be well into the future the most important functions of a successful management team. The four most traditional and necessary functions of a management team are planning, organizing, leading and controlling. All four of them are required for success.
The planning function starts with the very basics and extends to the very intricate parts of the success. This is where the ideas start. We have to first know what the goal is in order to achieve it. The best way to determine this is to analyze the situation and determine what needs to be changed and the best way to go about achieving that change. During this stage it is necessary to look at the past within the organization as well as the present state of the competition in order to anticipate what your objectives should be. An organization has to strategically determine the best way to utilize its resources.
