Final Exam Review Sheet – World Civ Japan The Final will be broken down as follows: 5 (6 pt./each) ID, 1 (20 pt.) short answer, and 1 (50 pt.) Essay. Topics: Unification of Japan Tokugawa Shogunate Meiji Restoration Japan, Militarism and Imperialism 1930’s Japan – Korea/China World War II and Japan Postwar Japan Focus on important figures, themes, and activities. Exact dates are not important, but you should be able to place events and persons chronologically within your essays. You must also be able to explain why these concepts/persons are significant. IDs You will choose 5 of 8 identifications to work on. Each will be worth 6 points. You should expect to write a short paragraph for each ID. Short Answer You will receive 1 short answer question. This should be about 1-2 blue book pages in length. Essay You will receive 2 of the following three essay questions, and you will choose one to work on. Since you have the questions in advance, you should be well prepared for them on the exam. Some historians have argued that the period of control by the Tokugawa shogunate served to handicap Japan, since its effective ‘closing’ resulted in technological ‘backwardness.’ Discuss your own views about the nature of the Tokugawa period, focusing upon whether or not you believe the country was irreversibly handicapped by the Tokugawa rule of law. You should focus upon life for the elites and average citizens during the Tokugawa, along with the shifting role of the samurai, development of new classes, and cultural/technological/scientific achievements. Discuss the changes implemented during the Meiji Restoration. How was society modified? Who were the reformers, and what causes did they champion? How did life change for the bulk of the Japanese population during this period, and further, how did these citizens react to the political and social changes put in place during the early Meiji?
