Writing As Critical Thinking Assessment
This Writing as Critical Thinking Assessment has two parts. Part 1 asks you to analyze a given article by examining the author’s thinking in relation to Paul and Elder’s Elements of Thought. Part 2 asks you to assess article by applying the Intellectual Standards.
Parts 1 and 2 are based on the International Critical Thinking, Reading, and Writing Test (Paul & Elder, 2006).
Be sure to communicate in a scholarly manner when responding to each of the following items. For example, use proper grammar, cohesive sentence structure, clear and direct language, correct punctuation, and well-developed paragraphs. Provide a one- to two-paragraph response for each item.
The main purpose of this article is:
I feel like the author had many purposes in writing this article. One purpose of this article was to communicate to reader’s what learning skills have worked for online readers. The author uses experiences from successful online learners, to convince the reader that the skills and practical steps that are mentioned in the article, lead to a successful online experience. The author’s purpose was also to cover the topic, “How Students Develop Online Learning Skills?” from the perspective of successful online learners. For example, the author states, “Of the students that were selected, 59 achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.5” (Roper, 2007, p.62). Another purpose of this article was to cover this topic from the perspectives of successful online learners. The author states, “Educators have speculated on the development of student skills necessary to succeed in online learning, but relatively few publications cover the topic from the perspective of successful online learners” (Roper, 2007, p. 62). The author is using the experiences of other online readers to help future online readers.
