Introduction

In every organization there are hurdles we much get over to get to the top, and even at the top there are challenges, Good Sport is no different. Fitness manufacturers have to consider the latest trends while designing and manufacturing fitness equipment too keep up with latest trends. Managers play a crucial role in initiating new ideas and processes and influencing employees to accept these changes. Brittany Smith, Senior Manager, Research & Development was faced with several challenges while climbing the corporate ladder at Good Sport. Brittany had to use political strategies to increase her power within the organization and achieve organizational goals.
Frazier O’Donnell, a well know, newly appointed designer of fitness equipment has developed a prototype of a interactive, holistic exercise equipment called XtendSport. The sales department at Good Sport had shown reluctance to the product because they felt the product required lots of concept selling. Brittany, persuaded the sales department to accept the design prototype. Brittany was than faced with yet another challenge as Senior Manager, R & D, the Production department opposed the new equipment claiming that it increase manufacturing cost. Brittany had to convince the Production department that the product could be manufactured using existing technology and low costs.
After XtendSport was accepted and produced, it did remarkably well in the market, Eartha Simpson, CEO was so impressed with Brittany’s work that she promoted her to Vice President, Production. As a result of this promotion Brittany was than faced with yet another hurdle of dealing with the resistance of three levels in the power structure-subordinates, peers, and the CEO. The biggest challenge faced was after being promoted to Chief Executive Officer (CEO), behind Karl Andersson, an autocratic CEO who left a bad legacy by trying to gain power over his peers and subordinates by controlling information.
