Yearning for Learning
It would be challenging to support a family today without obtaining an undergraduate education. The job market is difficult, and the way things are done is ever evolving.
May I respectfully suggest an addition to this well-known motto that is too long to put on the sign but important for us to remember regardless of which university or college we attend: “Enter to learn to love learning and serving; go forth to continue learning and serving.” (2008, p. 51)
This would be a grand motto for everyone to keep in mind when obtaining an education, wherever it may be. Leaving school with the tools necessary to continue learning in an ever-changing world will add value to family, employment, and personal endeavors. Students in and out of school can increase their yearning for learning, and therefore their personal success, by developing awareness of their own learning and thinking, engaging actively with material, and working hard to complete educational tasks.
Knowing the strengths and weaknesses of their learning abilities enables students to learn effectively. This process of developing an “awareness or analysis of one’s own learning and thinking processes” (Merriam-webster.com, 2013) is called metacognition. This process can teach students a lot about themselves and can be fun, rewarding, and a valuable way of growing. Metacognition can increase a student’s yearning for learning by allowing greater success. How is this accomplished? As students learn how to cater to their own strengths and weaknesses, they are more able to achieve success. Students will gain the tools that will enable them to adapt to an ever-changing informational environment, as they understand their own learning processes. said:
