Over the past two decades, research approaches and designs have multiplied to the point that researchers have many choices at their disposal1. It is however important that individuals designing a research proposal or engaging in the final research use a generally accepted framework to guide them through all the facets of the study. Use of such an extant framework enables researchers to organize their ideas for better comprehension by their audiences. To further delve in the same, this essay discusses research methods applied in two separate studies conducted. The essay discusses the approaches and designs used in the two studies to with a view of demonstrating the differences in the approaches used.
The two researches conducted were; A) the effectiveness of multifaceted fall prevention program in older adults, and B) changing the attitudes of persons with disabilities through sports. Study A was set understand the effectiveness of multifaceted intervention measures in older patients. The measures included geriatric fall risk assessments, counselling and training on fall prevention, group based exercises, home-based exercises, home modification to prevent falls, and weekly engagement in psychosocial groups. Study B sought to explore the significance of sports in changing the attitudes of persons with disabilities with regards to the challenges they face in life.
Study A adopted quantitative research methodology over qualitative methodology. Quantitative methodology largely employs survey questionnaires to collect data from high number of participants for numeric or statistical analysis2.
