he story starts on Calypso’s island with Odysseus being stuck on the island due to Calypso’s infatuation with him. Finally Athena, the goddess of wisdom, intervenes and convinces Zeus to help set Odysseus free from Calypso. So Zeus sends Hermes to convince Calypso to let Odysseus leave. At last Odysseus sets sail on his raft and Poseidon made a storm knowing it would be his last time he could torment Odysseus. With his ship destroyed, Odysseus was lucky enough to have a sea goddess give him her veil to swim upon until he reached the shore of an island.
Again, Athena came to Odysseus’ rescue by appearing as a dear friend of the princess of Phaeacia and lead the princess and some of her companions to where Odysseus was by a river. Odysseus is welcomed into Phaeacia as a honorable guest. Not long after he arrived in the palace he was invited to a royal feast. At the feast, there are songs sung about the war at Troy and once it brought tears to Odysseus’ the king stopped the singing and had Phaeacian’s exhibit their skills in boxing, wrestling and running.
Though some of the young men thought, that since Odysseus decided not to compete in any athletic contests, he had no skills what-so-ever in athletics. In turn, Odysseus showed what marvelous skills he did indeed posses. Soon the kingdom was curious as who Odysseus was and he then began to tell them his story.
He starts with saying who he father is and where he is from. And then it goes into what happened to him after the war in Troy. He and his crew are traveling until they reach the land of the Lotus-Eaters. The people of the island were very friendly and offered the crew lotus fruit. The lotus fruit, the fruit of forgetting, made them all forget there desires to go back home to Ithaca. So Odysseus had to go to the island to retrieve the crew that had eaten the lotus fruit and take them back to the ship. Next Odysseus and his crew went to the Cyclops island.
