"North Branford Varsity squad, you may now take the mat." The calm words seemed to scream into my head above all my other racing thoughts. Our team paraded onto the mat and before I realized what was taking place, I felt my body instinctively move into position. I waited, smiling, in fearful anticipation for the music to start. My mind was blank; it felt as though I had forgotten everything, yet immediately the familiar chant soon began to pour from my mouth. All fear was lost as we moved in unison from one formation to the next, our motions perfectly synchronized. I could tell from the intimidating sound of our own voices booming across the gym that we were performing better that we ever had. Only one more element remained; we were almost there. I quickly moved into my final formation and once again waited for the music to begin. My flyer placed one foot in my hand, then the next. With the help of my group, I lifted her over my head; all I needed to do was catch her foot with my outstretched arm. I saw her body coming towards me as I awaited the feel of her worn shoe in my palm. I grasped for it, but it slipped away. I tried to save it, but it only came down faster. Our stunt group had fallen. We tried to regain control, but all around us the rest of our team was falling apart as well. After months of hard work and dedication, each one of our stunt groups had tumbling to the ground. I was devastated but finished the routine through glistening eyes and a forced smile along with the rest of my broken hearted teammates. I have constantly heard the phrase, "Winning isn't everything," but never truly appreciated it until I experienced it firsthand. We had worked on that routine all year, dedicating our time each day and sacrificing other activities for the benefit of the team. Naturally, as competition season neared, the atmosphere at practice grew quite tense but we all did our best to make it productive, knowing that...
