In the play A Raisin in the Sun, author Lorraine Hansberry portrayed the story of an African American family after World War two trying to survive on a low budget, during the tough times of segregation in the Chicago slums. The author quickly described every character in the Young Family thoroughly and simply their role in the play. Each character had their dream within the family. With the main character Mama (Lena) Young’s husband passing away everyone is trying to get a piece of the ten thousand dollars Mama Young was granted. Living in a house with dingy furniture and a community bathroom also used by the neighbors is not the type of happiness Mama had detected within her household. During this time, African Americans were trying to integrate with white people. As a black family, job opportunities were very awful and majority of them were working for white people such as Walter Young being the chauffeur for someone. The Young families’ dream was the key to the happiness they sought and still seek. Hansberry used this play to create an idea that even tough times can be overcome, and dreams can come true.
Everyone has their own dreams on what do with the money that is not even theirs. Basically, I felt that Mama Young with her new found wealth, should continue her pursuit in continuing to invest in a new nice house of her own such as her, and her husband had spoken about before he departed. With Ten thousand dollars coming in the mail, Mama had to decide what to do with it. The youngest of the family, BeneathaYoung hopes for tuition money to try to continue onto college. She also has a rich boyfriend named George who I think she with just because he is rich. Hansberry argues that Beneatha is the least traditional of the women because she is the youngest. I feel that Beneatha is just simply living in her own world, trying to make something out of everything. I think if she gets the tuition to go to school she will be very successful.
