“H” is for Hypocrite!
The gift that I chose is for the Puritan people. They have forgotten about their culture and they don’t even realize it. They dug deep into Hester Prynne’s personal life and punished her severely for her sin. As if a demon child wasn’t punishment enough. Yet they didn’t even happen to notice the sins they were committing at the very moment they were giving Hester punishment for her sin. So they are hypocrites. That is why I am giving them big, fat H’s to wear on their chests.
The Puritans deserve those H’s because of many significant events in the book. First of all at the beginning of the book when all the gossips were calling Hester a hussy and talking about what should be done with her. In that scene they were being hypocrites because they were jealous of her and they were gossiping about her. Which are both sins.
Then when Hester and Pearl were going to the mayors house they saw his lavish house. Again that was hypocritical because plainness is one of the main parts of Puritanism. That house was definitely not plain.
Then another time was on election day when all of the Puritans were celebrating. They were enjoying themselves in total chaos. They were fighting, smoking, celebrating, etc. That was also not what Puritanism was all about.
Another reason that it would be a good idea to give them the H’s is because their hypocrites and it will show it even more because they are wearing a pretty H on their chests. It will probably give them a taste of their own medicine.
