In “Z: The Movie That Changed My Life,” Erdrich shows the impact that the movie had on her life: “As it turned out, it was my first view of the world” (111).

In “How It Feels To Be Colored Me,” Zora Neale Hurston states “I remember the very day that I became colored” (139). She describes how this change came to her.

In this first essay, choose an event that had an impact on or changed your life. Describe this event and the specific changes.

Purpose: To use narrative, description and specific details to convey to your audience how particular events caused some effect. Your essay should “show” rather than tell. Writing this essay should help you learn how to use examples and specific details, skills that you will need throughout this course.

Audience: general readers

Advice:  Because this essay is about technology in your life, you should feel free to use first person, I. Remember that details, vivid verbs, and clear language are the key to writing an interesting essay. Don’t fall in love with the thesaurus. You have your own writing voice, and while a thesaurus is often useful, it can also result in your using stilted language, or worse, words that you don’t really understand. This lack of understanding can make it easy to use the wrong word for the context.

Format: All essays should be double-spaced with one inch margins. Use 10 or 12 point font of Times New Roman, Arial, or a similar font.
