The Party tends to take over almost every aspect of every relationship anyone has in 1984. They have changed the way people approach each other. “You do not have friends, you have comrades”, the name instantly changes the way emotional connection is valued. The single word “comrade” creates that blockade between the heart and the mind. They specifically attack the mind and make everyone almost like robots and just do their duties without a single question about it. They do not know what love is because they are trained by the Party how to be cold hearted. Lastly they aren’t allowed to have special connections with anyone therefore being “friends” with someone is completely unheard of. Basically the Party brainwashes their people to become heartless creatures with no feelings and only have them focus on the task at hand.
Big Brother tends to have a triple threat on the hierarchy regarding family, friends, and Intimacy. The first place Big Brother hits the people with is the Physiological category. Usually with normal families everyone lives together and gets good night sleeps and eats together. Big Brother takes this away from the average family in Oceania because they can’t comfortably sleep, they don’t have enough food to feed everyone, and they even take some family members right out of their homes so they’re all split up. This leads into the next hierarchy that Big Brother hits, safety. The people of Oceania have zero freedom from fear, they can’t even trust their own family. In Oceania the children are trained to give any sign of difference away no matter who the person is or what the situation tends to be. This takes away people’s security and safety such that no one is allowed to make any type of mistake or else they’re is severe consequences. Big Brother’s biggest hit on the hierarchy has to be love and belonging. They completely stop any and every one from having any type of feelings for anyone.
