30 Little Turtles

There are always people in America that need assistance with some sort of technological need. When you call into a company, most people expect to be able to understand the person that is talking to you whether they’re American or not. There are ways that these companies are trying to help foreigners with their speaking abilities so that you can better understand them. Who really wants to get help from someone they can’t understand? Is it really too much for an American to ask to have someone at a call center that speaks English clearly?
In “30 Little Turtles”, by Thomas L. Friedman, he states that there are many American jobs that are being outsourced to people in India. He states that “some do ‘outbound’ calls, selling things from credit cards to phone services to Americans and Europeans. Others deal with ‘inbound’ calls; everything from tracking lost luggage for U.S. airline passengers to solving computer problems for U.S. customers.” (142) He also shows that having jobs outsourced to India is not necessarily a bad thing at all because many people think they are stealing American jobs. He actually went to Ramallah, which is in the West Bank, and he spoke with three Palestinian young men. According to Friedman, one of them said, that “they all have no hope, no jobs and no dignity”, he also said that they all nodded when one mentioned that they are just “suicide bombers in waiting” (143). He argues that giving people in India jobs can also be treated as helping our national security. If you lower the amount of people that don’t have jobs, then the country will be a more safe area. He also mentions that these jobs that they are taking are mainly low-paying jobs in the U.S. and Canada; they also require them to have a more Canadian accent in order for them to work because most people that call in are either Canadian or American.
