Abnormal Psychology has many components affecting societies, and the need to recognize symptoms requires some studying. The purpose of this paper will give a better understanding of abnormal psychology by classifying and defining some of its challenges such as Situational Context, Historical Relativism, and Mind/Body. A situational context is necessary to analyze client’s ethics, age, gender, health, and their status in life. Historical relativism enables psychologists to compare and gather information on the patients’ background to find appropriate treatment. The evaluation of the mind and body is also viewed as a very important component, especially when time comes to educate societies into keeping their mind active to improve body functions, and how destructive substances can be, which are responsible in the depletion of the brain cells. In addition, a good balanced diet can prevent certain foods from blocking and slowing certain natural brain chemicals functions, which could interfere with the way nerve cells, send and receive information. Such foods could refer to increased caffeine, sugars, and nicotine. The biological, emotional, cognitive, and behavioral aspects are viewed in combination of these components. At least three of the components listed in the DSM IV-TR help in diagnosing the abnormal disorder (Hansell & Damour, 2008).
Situational Context
The context of a situation is important when classifying normal and abnormal behavior. Normal and abnormal behavior is defined and best understood within the context of an individual’s life circumstances therefore abnormality cannot be defined until the context in which the behavior occurred is examined first.
