Abortion Study Analysis

“In making decisions about abortion, it is more helpful to focus on the quality of life rather than the sanctity of life.”

A relativist would agree that it is more helpful to focus on the quality of life i making decisions about abortion because abortion is a topic whereby it requires a judgement that depends on the situation and circumstances where there can be no universal right or wrong ‘result’ Thus, by relativism being teleological, an act is right or wrong by judgement of the ‘end’ whereby the end justifies the means. This shows that abortion can be right in some cases but also wrong in others. With an absolutist believing in focusing on e sanctity of life when making decisions on abortion, it shows that they are in belief that abortion is universally wrong in all cases, no matter what the circumstance as we need to protect the life that is a gift from God - the mother’s life is not taken into account. The foetus’ needs of life are more preciously regarded than that of the mother. In taking the relativist stance however and favouring using the quality of life belief in making decisions about abortion, by taking into account the circumstance(s), not only does it take into account the position of the foetus, but also the position of the mother. The quality of life for all involved are carefully considered. In adopting the sanctity of life stance however, it largely shows that abortion is always wrong, no matter what the circumstance because we must always strive to protect the life that is given to us by God. It neglects the state of the life of the mother, even though this is life given by God, so shouldn’t the mother’s life be protected just as equally as the foetus’? Thus, it is more helpful to focus on the quality of life rather than the sanctity of life in making decisions about abortion.

“When considering abortion, the rights of the foetus are more important than any other person’s rights”.
