General Purpose: To persuade
Specific Purpose: At the end of my speech, my audience will understand the viewpoint of the people who are “pro-life”.
Thesis: Abortion is a sad truth that is affecting our society today, and we have the power to do something about it. We have the power to stop the slaughter of innocent babies; but first, we need to educate ourselves about the situation.
I. Attention getter: I’m going to start with a little video first…It’s a sad day for humanity when we decide that something as pure and innocent as a child is a punishment. Tell me, how are these gorgeous babies a punishment? In 2010, the National Right to Life Committee published an article, in which they noted that since the controversial ruling of Roe. Vs. Wade in 1973, there have been almost 53 million abortions nationwide (NRLC, 2010).
II. Provide background/build up topic: For those of you that don’t know, Roe. Vs. Wade was a ruling that basically allowed women the right to terminate their pregnancy whenever they wanted, any time before the baby is considered legally “viable”, which, in most states is about 27 weeks. As a country who greatly proclaims to be such a great advocate for human rights, we seem to be doing a great job murdering our youngest and most defenseless citizens. What about the rights of those children who don’t have a voice? Don’t those little babies deserve anything? From the moment of conception, a woman grows another human life inside of her. From the moment of conception, that developing baby has the potential to achieve something great in this world.
III. Credibility: Growing up, I always heard opinions about the abortion controversy, so I decided to familiarize myself with the two sides of the situation. As I spent more and more time researching abortion and reading the arguments that both pro-life and pro-choice advocates make, I realized just how deep this debate actually goes.
