Topic: Based on the information you read about cultural diversity in literacy classrooms, how do you see yourself implementing strategies to help bridge the gap for those that have culturally diverse needs in your classroom? Be sure that you give at least 2 specific examples and thoroughly explain how you would implement these strategies
There are many things that I would do to help bridge the gap for cultural diversity in my classroom.  This is something that is extremely important to me, as I currently live in a city where so many different cultures reside and is where I want to teach.  I had not noticed until I moved to Killeen how some students do not understand their culture and are extremely confused by how they have so many different cultures around them.  I think one thing I would do is have a culture day in my classroom where I would invite families to visit and share their culture.  Not only would this be fun for the students, but it would also be very educational.  I remember back in elementary school we celebrated International Night and I along with many others was very excited to my culture with our class, but also learning about other students’ culture, as well as my teachers.  Another way I would bridge the gap for cultural diversity in my classroom would be to provide books and create power points of diverse countries from student in our classroom, their cultures, customs and brief but important information for students to learn from one another. “Teachers need to help all students develop cultural, national, and global identification” (Vacca et al, pg. 71).  I believe this would be a great and fun way to do so.  This way, students can learn about all of their classmates different cultures on their own time.  I think if teachers bridge and fill the gap to help students understand differences in cultures since their early stages of life, then children will be more understanding as they grow older and will not be as surprised as they...
