A. What will be the title of your experiment
-Absorbance in Green Spinach and Purple Cabbage
B. Experimental Basics:
1. what is your hypothesis?
H0 : The red cabbage absorbance would be no different from the green spinach absorbance
Ha : the red cabbage absorbs wavelength differently from the green spinach
2. What is your independent variable?
- Wavelength
3. What is your dependent variable?
- color of leave/absorbance
C. Experimental Design
Obtain 2 cuvettes (4 mL) and fill one with 3 mL chromatography solvent and one with 3 mL of dilute chlorophyll solution.
Measure the light absorption of the chlorophyll extract for wavelength of 375-725 nm moving in 25 nm increments. Be sure to blank at each wavelength. What cuvette will you use to blank? Why? Record values in Table1.
Graph light absorptions versus wavelength.

1. What are your experimental groups?
- Red Cabbage Leaves
2. What are your control Groups?
- Green Spinach leaves

E. Analysis of Results
From our experiment, we were able to support our hypothesis in the thought that the absorbance from the photosynthetic pigments from the purple cabbage would give different absorbance reading from the photosynthetic pigments from the green spinach leaves. The peak absorbance for the purple cabbage was with a different wavelength than the green spinach leave. This difference in absorbance was mostly likely due to the color of the pigments in the leaves. Colors are known to absorb different wavelengths and reflect certain others as well, that can be seen here.
