Abstract
Throughout history, new technologies affected World War I and the way it was fought. However, this war did not ‘rise’ from nothingness. There must have been an explosion of bad actions that caused it. A bad action, rather is the cause of World War One. An assassin from Serbia, 19-year old Gavrilo Princip, famously nicknamed ‘Black-Hands’ expressed his own nationalism against a country with a strained relationship, Austria-Hungary. The victims, Archduke Franz Ferdinand - heir to the throne of the Austria-Hungarian Empire, and his wife Sophie, were in the Bosnian city along with Military Troops on guard nearby. (Brook-Shepard, (1984)) Serbia gave all resources, weapons, ammunition, and the training necessary to make this assassination possible. As the part played by Serbia became distinct, Austria-Hungary became aware and declared war on them. Austria-Hungary began to move their troops into Serbian territory. Once this occurred, it kick started Alliances from all over the world, Thus the name of World War I. After this started, a new warfare started to take effect. The warfare was called ‘Trench Warfare’ giving new ways to sometime elude or evade enemies. However, along with the positive aspect of the cover it provides, there are also negatives. The invention of new weapons, Mustard Gas, Flame Throwers, Automatic Weapons, the introduction of Tanks, destroyed the concept of Trench Warfare. Although it was still being used, a soldier still worried about the many things that could come his way. “Mustard Gas approaching, cannot find a mask. Flames being thrown towards the Trench, No escape. Mechanical Weapon carriers, he has nothing to protect himself.” As these concepts became more advanced, war continued. This brings us to the conclusion of “certain technologies affected the way this war was fought.” (ggeorginaa, 2013)
