1. Discuss the first child abuse case in this country to attract widespread attention. How was the case finally settled?
Mary Ellen, was the first child that was recognized as being abused in this country. Her father died leaving her with her mom to be responsible to support her. Not being able to support her, she was placed in a home with the McCormack’s, where the abuse began. At the age of ten Mary Ellen was abused, beaten, slashed with scissors, and she had not been outside in seven years. It wasn’t until a missionary named Etta Wheeler, that Mary Ellen was rescued from such a cruel and harsh life. I believe that we should get involved to save our precious gifts that God placed in our care to nurture and love.
This story is so heartbreaking, but true. We should not sit back and watch these babies go through any type of an abuse. After finding out about my ex husband sexually abusing two of our girls, It was so unbelievable and heart wrenching to even phantom that my husband would do something so cruel. So, it doesn’t matter what type of abuse you are in get those babies out. Don’t be afraid to leave, it will make take such a burden off your life, and the children will not be at peace. No child should have to go through ABUSE!
Henry Bergh’s ASPCA, the Animal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was instrumental in her rescue. There were no agencies that would get involved, so the ASPCA used it’s power and influence not only to save Mary Ellen, but to charter the first organization of it’s kind to prevent cruelty to children.
2. Discuss the case and give an opinion if there was abuse involved.
No, I don’t think that this abuse because, it was their tradition to cure high fevers. I think the teachers should have investigated a little more to find out if this was something that they believed that would cure their child. We must embrace all cultural.
