The Marine Corps weighs heavily on its leaders to enforce accountability upon themselves and their subordinate Marines. If these Marines are not held accountable, then discipline along with many other characteristics will be thrown away over time. If these Marines are held accountable, then these Marines will mature over time and will be able to teach accountability to their Marines and they will understand why it is so important. Accountability within the Marine Corps is important to every single Marine and even Sailor. It is important because these Sailors waste their time and money getting the appointments and equipment ready for said Marine. Accountability, to me, is a responsibility or an obligation to be somewhere or do something for someone. It is a very serious issue because there are Marines who are not held accountable and who will continue to be irresponsible. Accountability can affect small unit leadership in a positive or in a negative way. The small unit leadership can be affected positively by accounting for their Marine who is not at formation. It doesn’t always have to be a Marine that is accounted for; it can easily be a weapon or serialized gear such as NVG’s. Accountability can affect a unit very easily by Marines making mistakes or typos in an MVGL or a lost RT. Making sure all of these government properties and Marines are accounted for is very serious and important not only on the small unit leader level but the unit level and even on the regiment level.

Unauthorized Absence in the Marine Corps is a very serious issue and is harshly dealt with and is usually resolved with an NJP. Unauthorized Absence is very important in the Marine Corps because it makes Marines accountable because nobody wants an NJP on their record nevertheless paperwork.
