Achieving One's Goal

Nido Qubein once said, “Winners compare their achievements with their goals, while losers compare their achievements with those of other people.” It takes great confidence in yourself to achieve your goals in life. Being able to overcome different circumstances and being strong helps motivate people to achieve their goals. I have achieved one of my goals and receive a great achievement during my junior year in high school. First, going from a JV level high school basketball player to a Varsity basketball starter, then winning a business competition in my entrepreneur class my junior year of high school.

Basketball has been a true inspiration in my life since my early years. From 5th through 8th grade I was on the varsity basketball team at Holy Spirit School. I felt that I was a good basketball player throughout my years in middle school, but once I got to high school I experience some difficult times in my basketball career. My freshmen and sophomore years, at Neumann-Goretti, were the toughest years of my basketball career. When I noticed that I wouldn’t be playing as much as I wanted to, I became discouraged because I knew I was capable of being a good basketball player. Coaches were lying to me saying I would get time, players were being recruited and taking the time that coaches were telling me I would have and it seemed like I was being committed and doing everything I was suppose to be doing for no reason. During my sophomore year, I was telling my mom that I wanted to transfer because I want to play basketball on the high school level. At first, my mom didn’t agree with my decision, but as I kept bugging her about it, she finally took it into consideration. I met with the coach of Paul Robeson High School in the summer of 2008 and that was the turning point in my life.
