Adolescent depression is more similar the same as adult depression only that the causes and symptoms may be different because there are different developmental and social factors the two characters’ encounter.
For instance, there are various causes of depression in adolescents, such as class grades, the performance quickly affects adolescents, and they feel inadequate and worthlessness. They can also be depressed by feeling low in social status. The other cause of depression in adolescents is the poor family life; this is the most common one. Because such an age more attached to their family and they are extremely fragile. It should be noted that whatever, an adolescent will be depressed if he or she fails to achieve satisfaction from the things he or she always enjoy.
There are different characteristics or symptoms that one may notice in a depressed adolescent, for example, a child will lack motivation and morale in whatever they do or called to do, they tend to close their doors after school, they may prefer staying in their bedrooms for longer periods. At times, they sleep excessively and times eating habits may change. One of the best ways of keeping a child away from depression is persistent counseling and keeping the teen engaged in social activities such as singing among others (Goodyer, 2009).
Under primary prevention, it would be best for parents to engage their children through talking and listening to them, encourage children to participate in their (parents) activities and the parents also engage in their children’s activities. A secondary method involves treatment of a child who is already depressed. However, in the event a child is already depressed, there are methods through which cure can be administered, which include selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors; this type of treatment is known for not having side effects compared to other types of medication.
