Imagine growing up and not have a house to call a home and parents to call mom or dad. That’s where adoption comes in. Adoption means to take into one’s family through legal means and raise as one’s own child (The American Heritage Dictionary Book). “Adoption’s close association with humanitarianism, upward mobility, and fertility, however, are uniquely modern phenomena” (http://darkwing.uoregon.edu/adoption/topics/adoptionhisbrief.htm). The first thing that comes to mind when I hear the word “Child Adoption” is infertility. A couple may adopt if they can’t have children. People also adopt if they only have one child or two same genders and could not have anymore due to medical reasons. Perhaps they have decided not have another child natural but they don’t want their only child to be lonely. Modern adoption law was passed in 1851 in the state of Massachusetts. It recognizes adoption as a social and legal operation based on child welfare rather than adult interest (http://pages.uoregon.edu/adoption/timeline.html). When a couple decides to adopt a child, they have to go through the process. Deciding what race, ethnicity, age and special needs of a child is very personal. Selecting an adoption agency is important and people needs to know that there are two types of agency. There are private and public agencies. The differences are private handle all domestic and intercounty adoptions and public handles special-needs adoptions and adoptions of older children. Before making your selection on what agency you want to do business with, it’s important to do your homework. Ask the agency for references, check on their licensing and inquire about the fees and payment schedules, and look the company under business bureau. As far as the fees, there are available funds just for adopting a child through state and federal. Some employers and charities offer free money for adopting. Once agency has been selected, that’s when the application needs to be completed....
