Against the Legalization of Marijuana

Marijuana was legal up until the early 1900s when the possession or transfer of marijuana became illegal in the United States. The government of the United States had reasons for making it illegal then, so should the use of marijuana be legalized now? Each and everyone should have an opinion regarding this issue including the office of our congressman for the state of Mississippi. Legalizing the use of marijuana is immoral under all circumstances, even when being prescribed for medical purposes and a person does not have to be a smoker for the use of this drug to affect them.

Marijuana is a gateway drug. People generally begin their drug use by opening the doors to the recreational use of marijuana and amongst marijuana’s most harmful consequences is its role in leading to the use of other illegal and highly addictive drugs such as cocaine, heroin or even meth. While not all people who use marijuana go on to use other drugs it is important to recognize that using marijuana sometimes lowers inhibitions about drug use and exposes users to a culture that encourages the use of other drugs. There are people out there that feel the right to use marijuana should be just that, their right. One of their reasons advocates express when appealing for marijuana legalization is the use of marijuana for medical purposes such as to decrease pain and suffering for someone who has been diagnosed with a terminal medical condition. What happened to pain killers such as Lorcet or Vicodin? Isn’t that what these medicines are prescribed for, for those who are suffering from pain? There are no major health associations out there that accept the use of marijuana as being medically necessary and there has been no evidence providing reliable scientific proof that marijuana has any type of medical value.
