Aapril Rice Professor Shultz Introduction to Health 10/23/08 “Alcohol Possibilities and Impacts” As a freshman in college, I have already discovered that discovering drinking at a university is easy as well as inevitable. Many college students participate in social drinking and binge drinking at parties. Many students are not aware that, although they believe they will be able to handle themselves, after drinking excessively your motor skills are impaired and your way of thinking is also. “1,700 college students between the ages of 18 – 24 die each year from alcohol related unintentional injuries, including motor vehicle crashes” (Hingson et al., 2005). Yesterday as I sat and listened to Chuck Colby, Assoc. VP, Residence Life, Mansfield University speak about the dangers of drinking my attention was caught when he told stories from personal experience. The story that stood out the most is the story of his son. His son had been taking part in binge drinking and got himself into a fatal accident while under the influence. This story hit home because I just recently went through a similar incident with one of my close friends/co-workers. Fortunately, my friend did not die but her life is still changed forever because of drinking. The accident did not only affect her, it affected everyone around her. We held a fund raiser for her at work so her story even impacted complete strangers. Young people tend to not think beyond getting that “buzz”. “599,000 students between the ages of 18 – 24 are unintentionally injured under the influence of alcohol” (Hingson et al., 2005). It is crucial that they start because not only does drinking affect the drinker but if something goes wrong it affects many around them. The man that spoke yesterday was clearly hurt. I’m sure that if his son were still alive, he would not want to see his father hurt in such a way.
