Lawrence Chirico Chirico 1 Professor Newhouse CWP 101 7 September 2008 An Active Day at the Fire hall It was a warm afternoon in late August at my fire station located in Cheektowaga, NY. The kids were out for summer recess and it was shaping up to be a very hot day. I took the course of a normal day and woke up to a nice breakfast looking forward to a day of relaxation with an obvious few emergencies to respond to at the fire station, since I was a volunteer there. It was normal for me to dedicate my time to the fire hall on an average day responding at anytime of the day and night to car accidents, strokes, heart attacks, to house fires. I loved to devote my time and effort to serving the community and protecting the citizens of Cheektowaga. Unfortunately this was not the day I thought it would ever turn out to be. After my morning routine of eating, working out, then showering, I drove over to the station to spend a day with the guys including watching television on the big screen, ordering in food for lunch and organizing and ordering new supplies. About four times during that short five hour period we got called to emergencies including a Heart Attack, a motor vehicle accident, and a Co2 home detector activation call.I would usually never remember the exact calls in a day, let alone the types of calls, but the memories of this day are engraved in my mind I will never forget it in my life. After the Co2 detector call it was about 6:10 in the evening, I drove home the fire hall thinking of a great dinner I was going to enjoy with my family. As I arrived home, the food was ready on the table waiting to be served. I began to tell my parents about my day and the emergencies I responded to as my pager went off. It sounded off “U-Crest Fire Dept. Motor Vehicle Accident Intersection of Union and George Urban, injuries are uncertain, proceed with caution.”Now, as a Chirico 2 Volunteer fire fighter you do not have to respond to every single call, so after a...
