The “Mission statements identify the scope of the organization in terms of its product or service” (Gray and Larson, p.24, 2006), ultimately stating what the company want to become. To understand the situation, a brief analysis of the situation at Harrison-Keys (HK) will assist in identifying the issues. HK, a publisher of hard bound books, the company plans to implement a new e-book strategy and convert its existing titles to digital format. However, this process has come to a halt due to inadequate planning. These oversights have led to authors challenging contracts to the electronic conversion, an outsourced digital publisher was unable to meet deadlines due to unforeseen circumstances and internally the company IT department was not ready or able to support the move to e-commerce. This paper will identify a few of the major issues, situation analysis, ethical dilemmas, and possible solutions as it relates to HK.
HK determined through market analysis that it was in the company’s best interest to enter into thedigital media market. HK realized that the hard bound books sales were receding and in the marketplace that e-book sales were rising. At the same time, one of their Pulitzer Prize winning authors, Will X. Harper wrote a very stern letter to the CEO expressing several concerns including the issues of security /digital piracy, and changefinancial compensation. In addition, Asia Digital Publishing, the company that was hired to covert hard bound books into digital format has missed several deadlines and has failed to communicate effectively with HK. This has resulted in additional resources being allocated to the project.
