The ancient Greek culture is famous for many things but it is probably most famous for its history of Greek mythology. Greek mythology is full of good and evil, gods and goddesses, heroes and monsters, and epics, which are long narrative poems. Epics talk about heroes, and those heroes are usually called epic heroes. The heroes fight off the monsters and go through many difficult situations requiring courage and strength. (DEFINE EPIC HERO). The epic hero who is probably the most famous and is my favorite would be Odysseus. He is the main character in Homer’s well known novel, The Odyssey. Odysseus is considered to be an epic hero because he possesses great courage, emotional strength, and physical strength.
Odysseus’s courage is very evident in The Odyssey. He proves himself to be invincible by fighting off Poseidon. Afterwards, he gets back onto his ship to sail to Ithaca. When Circe turned his crew into animals, he took his own life into his hands to save his men. Odysseus truly showed his courage not only on the battlefield, but by doing anything possible to get back to see his family. He knew that someday he would see his wife and son again no matter the consequences. This also showed how much emotional and mental strength he had.
Odysseus was very fortunate to have emotional strength during his journey. He had a lot of knowledge and was wise enough to lead the Ithacans through the Trojan War. Odysseus was able to think up the idea of the Trojan Horse that resulted in a huge victory. The horse was placed outside of the walls of Troy and was supposed to be a “peace offering” to the Trojans from the Greeks. The Trojans believed this story and took the horse inside of Troy, which automatically let the Greek army in Troy to finally get to Trojans. The outcome of the victory was very positive because with the help of Odysseus, he and his army were able to successfully defeat the Trojans after a brutal ten year war.
