ANESTHESIA FOR THE DOG

Pre-Op—give 15-20 minutes prior to IV catheter/induction
Give one of the following IM:
ATROPINE (0.2 mg/kg) and MEPERIDINE (4-8 mg/kg)
ATROPINE (0.2 mg/kg) and OXYMORPHONE (0.08-0.12 mg/kg)
ATROPINE (0.2 mg/kg) and HYDROMORPHONE (0.1-0.2 mg/kg)
ACEPROMAZINE (0.02-0.1 mg/kg)
**GLYCOPYRROLATE-0.01 mg/kg may be substituted for atropine
**ACEPROMAZINE (0.02-0.06 mg/kg) with any narcotic above
BUPRENORPHINE-0.01 mg/kg
ACEPROMAZINE (0.02-0.04 mg/kg) and BUPRENORPHINE (0.01 mg/kg)

IV CATHETER PLACEMENT

INDUCTION
-Thiopental (2.5%) is given in a 2 mg/kg bolus (monitor pulses)
-Give a second bolus of 4 mg/kg after a 15 second pause
-Give in 2-4 mg/kg boluses until deep enough to intubate

INTUBATION / SURGICAL ANESTHESIA
-after intubated and cuff is inflated, start O2 and inhalant anesthetia
(usually O2 at 100ml/kg/min and 3% halothane)
-Tie in tube
-Ventilate as necessary
-Place esophageal stethoscope and opthalmic ointment
-Once at a surgical plane ( us. 5-15 min.) turn O2 to low...
