The sea otter is a very intelligent animal. In fact, the sea otter is so intelligent that it wraps itself up in kelp, so it won’t float away during the night. This animal belongs to the Genus: Enhydra, and belongs to the species: Lutris. The sea otter is the largest animal in the weasel family. The Sea Otter has dark brown fur and is four feet long. The male sea otter usually lives for about ten to fifteen years. The female sea otter lives for about fifteen to twenty years. Also, a male sea otter’s weight is around 65lbs. The female sea otter weighs around 45lbs. Living in the sea, the sea otter is a very amazing animal.
This animal inhabits the coastal areas of many countries around the world. The sea otter lives mostly in the Pacific Ocean. There are over fifteen thousand sea otters of the coast of Russia. Because of hunting and fur trade, there are less than a dozen of these wonderful creatures in the seas near Japan. The Japanese have issued a no hunting law so that this poor thing can get back to its former population. Many years ago, the sea otter ranged from the coast of Siberia, and was about two million to three million in number. This creature lives in coastal rocky places, no more than one mile from the shore. They also live near kelp forests. The sea otter doesn’t nest and live in one place. This animal moves around frequently and sleeps where ever it can find. Next I will talk about what the sea otter eats and how it hunts for its food.
The sea otter has a wide range of things that it hunts and devours. This sea fairing animal eats approximately twenty-five percent of its body weight each day. It also eats over forty six different species of animals. They include sea urchins, abalone, clams crabs, snails, shrimp and mussels. All of the sea otters food lives in the sea, and on the ocean floor. The sea otter is diurnal. This means that it hunts, eats, and forages during the day. The sea otter even uses tools to eat!
