Braveheart


Braveheart is the story of William Wallace, a man who leads fellow Scottish men to fight England for their freedom. William Wallace leads the Scottish in a rebellion against the English King, who gave the English Nobel men the 'Prima Nocta'. Prima Nocta is when the English noble men would take a Scottish woman to bed on her first night as a wife. After William marries his child hood love in secret, the English noblemen try to force themselves on her when she fights back they execute her in front of William saying that her attack on them was equal to an attack on the king. This is what causes William to start his rebellion against the king of England. It sparked the curiosity of many studying Scottish history. The film, however, was criticized about its historical inaccuracies. Without information and understanding of the actual events in Scotland during the time of William Wallace’s adventures, one would think that what was depicted in the movie was how it really happened during that time.

Not much is really known about the life of William Wallace. Even the date of his birth is a subject of discussion among many historians. And much of what we know is based on a fifteenth century poem known as the Minstrel or Blind Harry, with the purpose to present historical facts during the time of William Wallace in contrast to those that were presented in the beginning of the film: “SCOTLAND 1280 A .D,: I shall tell you of William Wallace . Historians from England will say I am a liar, but history is written by those who have hanged heroes. The king of Scotland had died without a son , and the king of England , a cruel pagan known as Edward the Longshanks , claimed the throne of Scotland for himself Scotland 's nobles fought him and fought each other over the crown .
