Applying Changes to Physical Therapy

In the field I wish to pursue which is physical therapy, I believe there are many things that can be changed. Just like everything else not just in the health profession but in life there are things that when you go to evaluate how efficient and effective you are in your field, you can always continue to find new ways to get better in your field. Physical is no different from these other fields and can always have room for improvement. Throughout this essay, I will take what I have learned from this semester regarding public health principles and use that to discuss some effective and efficient ways to better the physical therapy profession.
One of the public health principles that I learned about this semester was social behavior. This principle can have a very profound effect on any health profession, not just physical therapy. According to our book, Basics of Public Health Core Competencies, “The social and behavioral sciences in public health address the behavioral, social, and cultural factors related to individual and population health and health disparities over the life course”. Social behavior in public health requires that we understand how people take care of their health through their culture, their behavior toward their health, and how people in a community treat themselves. In physical therapy, our clients behavior towards their health in very important because it can determine how will they recover from their injury and determine the level of fluidity or stiffness they may have after their rehab. For example, say that I have a patient that is very lazy and shortcuts his rehab exercises. This means that this client is not getting the level of strength they need in that part of their body. As a physical therapist, you have to push your patients to work as hard as they can so that there is minimal pain after as they attempt to go back to being able to function in society.
