Are Mormons Christian?
During Mitt Romney’s 2008 campaign for President of the United States, his Mormonism became a controversial issue and the question was raised “are Mormons Christian?” While Mormons (properly known as members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) (LDS) do not believe in the Trinitarian doctrine as other Christian religions do, Mormons do believe in and worship Jesus Christ.
The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines Christianity as 1. Religion derived from Jesus Christ based on Bible as sacred scripture and professed by Eastern, Roman Catholic and Protestant bodies and 2. One who professes belief in the teachings of Jesus Christ.[1]
These two characteristics which define Christianity are very much a part of the Mormon culture. In 1996 Mormon Apostle Elder Wirthlin stated “Jesus Christ Himself is the chief cornerstone of our faith.” (1996) According to Christian Apologetics and Research Ministry, Mormons are not Christian based on three things:
1. The deity of Christ
2. Salvation through Christ
3. The gospel of Christ

Many other Christian denominations have claimed that Mormons believe in a different Christ. This statement is based on Mormons belief that the Godhead is comprised of three separate personages, as stated in the Mormons first Article of Faith “We believe in God, the Eternal Father and in His Son, Jesus Christ and in the Holy Ghost” (Smith, 1842, pg. 5 para.5) rather than accepting the Trinitarian doctrine which became defined by the Nicene Creed and is the accepted theology of most Christian denominations.
